Design Exercise 3

I’ve has some downtime recently, so for a change I’ve been working through some design exercises, just for kicks.

This latest exercise is based around the idea of ‘Found Rhythms’. Here’s what I did:

  • Cut a 2.5 inch hole through the middle of a magazine about surfing (chosen at random from the magazine shop. Doing this made me realise how great magazines are)
  • Selected 10 of the clippings and scanned them in
  • Created 10 pages, 5 inches x 5 inches, in my chosen page layout tool
  • Copied the plot of the film ‘Point Break’ from Wikipedia (to keep with the theme)
  • Laid out the images and text in a small book

The result: Found Rhythms (16.7 MB PDF – best viewed in 2-up page view)

As an added bonus, here’s my Spotify Point Break Soundtrack playlist to listen to, to complete the experience.
Ratt were actually a great band!
Kind of.

Shiny things!

This is a very geeky blog post, so turn away now if you are sensitive to that sort of thing…

So last week I decided to start another side project (of which all will be revealed if I ever complete it, as a teaser it has drama in it).

Dickens on the mob

“A mob is usually a creature of very mysterious existence, particularly in a large city. Where it comes from and whither it goes, few men can tell. Assembling and dispersing with equal suddenness, it is as difficult to follow to its various sources as the sea itself; nor does the parallel stop here, for the ocean is not more fickle and uncertain, more terrible when roused, more unreasonable or more cruel.”

Charles Dickens from Barnaby Rudge, describing the Gordon Riots in 1780.

Four Stories about my Grandfather

He travelled to the city where I live by train, arriving at noon. My mother had orchestrated the meeting, she persuaded me that my Dad could help me strip the paper from the walls in the sitting room of my new house. I had agreed. He would come down, work, then we would go out and have dinner somewhere. I told my mother that I didn’t want to drink a lot, hoping the message would get through. Continue reading

Unititled, Unfinished

These two lines have been rattling around my head for years.
I could never make line three, so I’m posting them here as a kind of exorcism.
Are they druids? I could never tell.

‘A vision?’, said I, in incredulous tones,
She watched as I picked through the animal bones.

Jack Kerouac on a TV near you

It always amazes me when I see people like Jack Kerouac on TV, getting interviewed. He seems a little uncomfortable here and the jazz is kind of weary sounding , but it is still great to hear him read.
